LUCY VS. LAPLAND: 5 things you maybe didn’t know about Finland

In 4 days (!!) we are headed to Levi, Finland to experience all that is Lapland/ Lapp Dance. This is mind-blowingly sick. Really. Let me just run you through the facts for a minute:

  • 4 days in Levi, the biggest ski resort Finland has to offer.
  • a range of epic Berlin’ers playing music to a bunch of club kids, nightly.
  • northern lights (I think?)
  • dog sledding
  • snow mobile safari
  • skiing
  • SAUNA !

What is there not to like about this experience. Not a question. But these negative temps and totally different lifestyles of the Arctic Circle have really got me thinking: How do people survive in Finland.. For example – I get the feeling Austria is full of serial killers and deranged people (no offense Austria, but you have a pretty sketchy history) and it’s not even  extreme anything there (weather, isolation etc.) !.. So the mind is blown by all the possibilities of the far North.

As a result of all this mental unrest, I made a list of the things your probably didn’t know about Finland.

SEE YOU ON FRIDAY GUYS !

SAUNA CULTURE IS NO JOKE
Yeah – probably this isn’t so revolutionary as a thing to know about Finland. The Fins like to sauna, they like to take cold showers or roll in the snow after they sauna, they like to brush themselves gently with birch branches to open pores and increase circulation while they sauna. For every 2.5 people – there is a sauna. Is it clear yet? SAU-NA !

HEAVY METAL FOR BABIES…YOU WHAT?
There is a heavy metal band for children in Finland. I’m not even pulling your chain – the band’s name is Hevisaurus (I see what you did there, band). I guess it’s not that surprising considering Finland has the the most heavy metal bands in the world per capita with a staggering 53 per 100,000 people. That-is-bonkers.

WIFE CARRYING IS A SPORT.. MARRY ME !.. THEN CARRY ME !
LOL. But seriously this is a thing and it’s exactly  how it sounds. Male competitors race while carry a female teammate – I am currently unclear if it actually has to be your wife, or just someone who is female but from all my knowledge of Finland and equality I feel like they wouldn’t discriminate if you weren’t married, but wanted to get involved.

The objective for the sport is for a male to carry their female through an obstacle course with the quickest time. It’s all very scientific and prizes are determine by the wife’s weight – which sounds terrifying. The Wife CArrying World Championships have found its way to Hong Kong, Australia and the US.

To be fair, Finland hosts a bunch of really weird competitions, including (but not limited to) the aforementioned wife carrying, mobile phone throwing (cheers land of the Nokia phone), air guitar (heavy metal influence) and boot throwing (the constant winter temp frustrations?). (Y)

GAMBLING FOR CHARITY
Finland seems to get it right on many things: their school system is consider some of the best in the world, it’s in the top three least corrupt countries (full stop), and they have got a handle on how to treat their wide spread Gambling problem (with slot machines in almost every store). They have monolopised it, with profits going to charities some of which include the treatment of gambling. Bloody genius.

IGLOO HOTELS ARE A VERY REAL THING
Tired of your regular run of the mill hotel? Same. Why not go to Finland and stay in a fucking Igloo. Are you kidding me? No short of a lie, at Kakslauttanen you can spend some nights sleeping below the stars and snow in an ice/ glass structure. That’s bonkers. Finland is bonkers.
